Cycling in Argyll
… as of Thursday, January 05, 2025
I decided it might be a good idea to document the kind of cycling which is done in our community. There's been a lot of misinformation lately on the use of trails and the notion that cyclists arrive at the Velodrome on their bikes.
It is my contention the vast majority of cyclists using the head of the trail at the parking lot behind the Community Centre are parking their vehicle and unloading the cycle of their choice.
This is a Tandem bike towing a little trailer which appears frequently in this area. They come up 88 Street and turn into the parking area and then up into the trail. I don't know how far they go but the kids enjoy it.
This is a Pleasure bike some fellow brought for his girlfriend to ride. They arrived in his car. The plates of the car say British Columbia so I don't know if they are tourists who learned of this location.
Note the tiny dog going along for the trip.
Two young men arrived with a rig holding their Mountain bikes in the back of a pickup truck. They came ready for a long ride with sunscreen and water packs on their backs. They were the second group to arrive while I was there.
This is a standard automobile bike rack on the back of a car. These are very common to see in the parking area. This couple arrived within minutes of the first group of young children. Within the span of 10 minutes there were five different groups of cyclists who parked and rode into the trail.
This is a Track Racing bike. These are only used to race with. This was taken during the Provincial Meet/Race on August 16, 2008. One of the racers told me his 'ordinary' racing bike with all the tires and handlebars was about $3,000. He also estimated there were as many as 50 riders at their competition that day.
This is a Road Racing bike. These seem to be modified 10-speeds which are more rugged than the usual touring bike (I have no idea how many gears). This was taken during the Canadian National Cyclo-cross championships on October 12, 2008. These racers came from across the country and they like the course the ravine makes.
